#18 – Hakarl – Iceland
Prepare your stomachs to hear what this meal is consisted of.
Hakarl is a meal originating from Iceland and its main main and only ingredient is ROTTEN shark. Although rotten shark may sound disgusting, Hakarl is for a reason made out from rotten Greenland sharks. The reason lies in the fact if Hakarl would be prepared from fresh Greenland shark meat, it would be highly toxic. By allowing the Greenland shark to rot and ferment, the fish becomes edible.
If you can pass the smell of ammonia and fetid fishy taste, then we recommend you to try out Hakarl, but it isn’t for everyone’s stomach – most first time eaters puke just sensing the smell of Hakarl. But, the Icelanders are so used to Hakarl that they eat it all year round and they even buy it at supermarkets.
